For the second year in a row, Leeward Community College will be presenting the Leeward Discovery Fair, Featuring Weed & Seed Hawaii and Safe Communities Day on Saturday, November 2, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Leeward CC’s Pearl City campus.

Fair attendees will enjoy over 50 hands-on activities that make learning fun for the entire family, including:

  • Build a Tetrahedral (3-D) kite that really flies!
  • Create genomic (one-of-a-kind) jewelry displaying your own DNA!
  • Take part in Leeward Five-0 by collecting and analyzing evidence in a forensic adventure and capturing the perpetrator of a dastardly crime!
  • Create bubbles in geometric shapes big enough to step into!
  • Play in quicksand goo!
  • Get a close-up look and feel of the creepy, crawly insect world of Bug City.
  • Create a DNA model out of candy!

Experience other activities involving robots, fossils, singing bowls, boomerangs, a pottery wheel, and polymer worms and much more.

Weed & Seed Hawaii will have a number of federal, state, and local law enforcement exhibits on display including Keiki and Kupuna IDs, presentations on the latest trends in substance abuse, and ways to protect your personal property.  Also on hand will be the popular K-9 unit showcasing its talented dogs trained to sniff out drugs and capture criminals.

“This unique partnership between Leeward Community College and Weed & Seed Hawaii is wonderful, as we work together to make education fun for the youth and their families,” said Manny Cabral, Chancellor of Leeward Community College.

“We appreciate this tremendous opportunity to partner with Leeward Community College,” said Maile Kanemaru, Director of Weed & Seed Hawaii.  “Bringing awareness to Weed & Seed Hawaii is critical as we continue to ’weed‘ out crime and ’seed‘ positive programs in our communities.”

Family games and prizes, a book fair, plant and vendor sales, entertainment, and local food favorites will also be available for families to enjoy.  Watch for special appearances by Clifford the Big Red Dog and McGruff the Crime Dog.

Entry to this event is free, however, some games and activities will have nominal fees.
