The University of Hawaiʻi Center for Southeast Asian Studies has been awarded $230,000 per year for the next three years through the Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships Program of the U.S. Department of Education.

This award will enable the Center for Southeast Asian Studies to fund graduate fellowships for students who study a Southeast Asian language at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.

UH Mānoa is the only university in the United States that can and does teach all four levels of all four major Southeast Asian languages: Thai, Tagalog, Vietnamese, and Indonesian. In addition, the Center is only one of eight National Resource Centers for Southeast Asian Studies in the United States.

The FLAS Fellowships Program provides academic year and summer fellowships to institutions of higher education to assist graduate students in foreign language and either area or international studies. FLAS Fellowships are funded through the U.S. Department of Education under Title VI of the National Defense Education Act of 1965.
