CTAHR Presents Winners of 2003 Student Research Symposium

The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa‘s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR) held its 15th CTAHR Student Research Symposium with more than 40 students presenting details of their research projects through posters and oral presentations. Nearly $6,000 in awards were presented for oral presentations or posters judged to be outstanding.

All presenters were honored at CTAHR‘s Annual Awards Banquet with certificates of participation. In addition, awards and endowed and annual scholarships were presented to:

· Dennis T. Higashiguchi, Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences — CTAHR Best Undergraduate Oral Presentation Award

· Aurelien Douette, Molecular Biosciences and Biosystems Engineering — Gamma Sigma Delta Undergraduate Oral Presentation Award of Merit

· Kia L. Weaver, Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences — CTAHR Best Undergraduate Poster Presentation Award

· Robert Hutchison, Physiology, and Molecular Biosciences and Bioengineering — CTAHR Best Master‘s Student Oral Presentation Award

· Cynthia Nazario, Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences — Gamma Sigma Delta Master‘s Student Oral Presentation Award of Merit

· Natalie Kong, Molecular Biosciences and Bioengineering — CTAHR Master‘s Student Oral Presentation Award

· James Leary, Molecular Biosciences and Biosystems Engineering — CTAHR Best Doctoral Student Oral Presentation Award

· Jonathan D. Awaya, Molecular Biosciences and Bioengineering — Gamma Sigma Delta Doctoral Student Oral Presentation Award of Merit

· Chad B. Walton, Molecular Biosciences and Bioengineering — CTAHR Doctoral Student Oral Presentation Award of Merit

· Wendy S. Kaneshiro, Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences — CTAHR Best Graduate Student Poster Presentation

· Yoon-Sup So, Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences — Gamma Sigma Delta Graduate Student Poster Presentation Award of Merit

· Buncha Chinnasri, Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences — CTAHR Graduate Student Poster Presentation Award of Merit

· Amber Sakagawa — The Dennis Y. and Brenda R. Teranishi Scholarship

· Sharyn Maeda — The George M. Yamane Scholarship

· Kia Weaver — The Richard Shimabukuro Memorial Endowed Scholarship

· Renee Molina — The Ralph H. Iwamoto Scholarship

· Nicole Tomas — The Noel P. Kefford Scholarship

· Nicole Iwasaki — The Derek Kurisu Scholarship

· Dennis Higashiguchi — The Maui Master Gardeners‘ Association Scholarship

· Vanessa Sim — The H. Dale Sato Urban Garden Center Scholarship

· Mei Cent Wong — The Carolyn and Goro Uehara Scholarship for Women in Agriculture

CTAHR also celebrated the establishment of three new endowments — The Andrew G. and Merle Hashimoto Endowed Scholarship Fund, The Fred Fujimoto Endowed Scholarship Fund, and the Hawaiʻi Florists and Shippers Association Endowed Scholarship Fund.

Initiated by CTAHR faculty in an effort to create more opportunities to provide students with exposure to the rigors of conference presentations, the symposium this year featured undergraduate and graduate students from CTAHR‘s Departments of Molecular Biosciences and Bioengineering, Natural Resources and Environmental Management, Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences, and Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences. Student presenters from department‘s other than CTAHR also participated, including UH Mānoa‘s Pacific Biomedical Research Center and UH Hilo‘s College of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resource Management.
