Professor David L. Callies, the Benjamin A. Kudo Professor of Law at the UH Mānoa William S. Richardson School of Law, recently received the 2012 Lambda Alpha International (LAI) Member of the Year Award.

LAI is an international honorary society concerned with land economics. Its membership - by invitation only – represents a virtual international “Who’s Who” in the field of land economics and related disciplines. This award recognizes and honors the international reputation Callies enjoys for his expertise in land use law.

This is the second recent honor for Callies, who also just released a new publication, Development by Agreement, that explores how agreements can be used to resolve a host of land use issues. He was one of three William S. Richardson School of Law professors honored at a recent book reception at the Pacific Club.

Law School Dean Avi Soifer noted that Callies has been an exceptional member of the law faculty for many years. Soifer said: “This award is extremely fitting because it demonstrates how widely recognized and very much appreciated David is far beyond what he has done for the Law School and for Hawai’i.”

Callies has published 20 books and more than 100 articles relating to land use, property, and state and local government regulations and issues. He has taught at the Law School since the 1970's and is the holder of its first professorial chair.

LAI membership represents a diverse group of professional disciplines in fields related to the ownership and use of land and buildings. With members around the globe, it enables scholars and distinguished practitioners to meet to discuss current issues involving use of land resources. LAI has chapters in key cities in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Japan, Spain, and India as well as members-at-large in many other parts of the world.

Callies in one of LAI/Hawai‘i’s founding members, is past president of the Aloha Chapter and he is also Pacific Rim Vice President. Callies has been instrumental in expanding its reach particularly by working with colleagues in Asia.
