The UH Manoa Department of Theatre and Dance is proud to present the regional premiere of “The Giver” as its first mainstage production of the 2012-13 season.  The play is adapted by Eric Coble from Lois Lowry’s Newbery Award-winning novel, which has sold more than 5.3 million copies in the U.S. since its publication in 1993.

Due to the quality of Lowry’s writing, the book has become a mainstay of middle school and high school literature classes.  But, due to the novel’s dystopian world and some mature themes, it is also one of the most banned and challenged books of the last two decades.

Mark Branner, Assistant Professor in the Theatre and Dance Department and Director of UH Manoa’s Theatre for Young Audiences program, will bring this exciting play to the Kennedy Theatre’s mainstage Sept. 21, 22, 28, and 29 at 7:30 p.m., and Sept. 30 at 2 p.m.

Audiences will also have the opportunity to attend a free pre-show chat on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 6:30 p.m.

Branner received his MFA from UH Manoa in 2002. This production is his first since returning to the University as a faculty member.

Tickets for “The Giver” will be available online at etickethawaii.com, by phone at (808) 944-2697, at participating outlets, and at the Kennedy Theatre box office beginning Monday, Sept. 10.  The box office is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, with extended hours on performance dates.

Prices are $20 general admission; $18 seniors / military / UH faculty and staff; $13 students; $10 children 2 - 17 years old; and $5 UHM students with validated Fall 2012 UHM photo ID.  All service fees are included in ticket price.

NOTE: Due to some mature themes, suggested age for audiences members is 8 and older.
