A marine science student in the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo Marine Option Program (MOP) recently took top honors in the 29th Annual Marine Option Program Student Symposium held in April at the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa.

The Award for Best Overall Research Paper went to Marine Science senior Ashley Bulseco for her project entitled, “The Effects of Acute High pCO2 Exposure on Growth and Survival of Crassostrea Gigas Larvae.”

In addition, six other UH Hilo students presented their work, which included oral and poster presentations on research and internship MOP projects: Lauren Bauers, Danielle Claar, Brittany Dolan, Megan Hess, Laura Knight, and Jacquelyn Troller.

The UH Hilo MOP is a hands-on program open to students in any field of study who have an interest in the ocean. It is directed on the UH Hilo campus by the Kalākaua Marine Education Center and is a certificate granting program which offers courses on marine project development through the Department of Marine Science. This is the 19th year that a student from UH Hilo MOP has won the Best Overall Research Award at the Annual Marine Option Program Student Symposium in its 24 years of providing awards. The annual symposium rotates between UH campuses and will be hosted by Maui College in April 2013.
