Dana Newman, a senior at the University of Hawaiʻi—West Oʻahu, has been awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to participate in the Spring 2003 study abroad programs worldwide. He is one of 172 outstanding American undergraduate students from over 100 universities and colleges in 43 states to have been selected for this award.

Newman is Hawaiʻi‘s only Gilman Scholarship recipient this semester. He is studying Maori political systems at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. Gilman Scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply towards their study abroad program costs.

The Gilman Scholarship Program aims to increase the diversity of U.S. students and institutions involved in international educational exchange. Recipients of the scholarship have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of other cultures, countries, languages, and economies -- making them better prepared to assume leadership roles within government and the private sector.

The program is sponsored by the U.S. State Department‘s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education‘s (IIE) Southern Regional Center in Houston, Texas. The IIE is the world leader in the international exchange of people and ideas. An independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1919, the Institute is the world‘s most experienced global higher education and professional exchange organization.

Nearly 700 students have received Gilman Scholarships since the program was established under the International Opportunity Act of 2000. The scholarship is named for Congressman Benjamin Gilman, who retired last year after serving in the House of Representatives for 30 years and chairing the House Foreign Relations Committee
