University of Hawaii Athletics to be Broadcast Internationally

KHNL/KFVE establishes broadcast agreements throughout Asia and in Israel

The faces and talents of University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Athletics will soon be seen in over 7 million households throughout Asia and in Israel. KHNL/KFVE has recently established broadcast agreements with networks in Taiwan, Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, and Israel, and is currently in the process of exploring the broadcast of UH athletic events in other countries as well.

More than 60 of this season‘s contests will be televised, most receiving an average of two airings that will result in nearly 500 broadcasts throughout the countries. In addition to dramatically increasing the University‘s exposure, the potential for more competition with international teams and an increased awareness of UH programs will be invaluable.

"This is an excellent opportunity for UH to gain international exposure and promote the University and its athletic programs," said Herman Frazier, UH Mānoa athletics director. "It also contributes to the University‘s vision of establishing itself as a bridge between the East and the West."

The current schedule includes the broadcast of games in Taiwan, Philippines, and Singapore from this past women‘s volleyball season as well as matches from the current men‘s volleyball and men‘s basketball season. There is also a scheduled broadcast in Singapore of the UH swimming and diving team‘s Last Chance Meet in March.

KHNL/KFVE has established two-year agreements with Videoland in Taiwan and StarHub Cable Vision in Singapore, and one-year agreements with an optional second-year in the Philippines with Solar Entertainment Corp. and in Malaysia with Astro. Andy Scott, a Honolulu-based media and entertainment entrepreneur and founder of Hawai'i Media International, helped broker all agreements in Asia. KHNL/KFVE also established a one-year agreement with METV in Israel. The agreements reached in these markets present an advertising value totaling more than $1.1 million.
