From June 30 to July 1, 2011, the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa will be hosting the Asia Pacific Trade Seminars (APTS) at the Center for Korean Studies. APTS provides an annual forum for exchanging research ideas in the field of international trade and investment.

The 2011 conference is expected to bring 60 trade economists from the Asia-Pacific region. Topics will include regional economic integration, intellectual property rights, foreign direct investment, and international environmental policy.

“We are thrilled that the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa is hosting the 2011 annual APTS meetings,” says Taiji Furusawa, Professor of International Economics at Hitotsubashi University in Japan, and the head of the APTS organizing committee. “Hawai‘i’s extensive ties to the Asia-Pacific and its renowned academic excellence make it a perfect destination for this meeting.”

APTS is just one of such international gatherings held in Hawai‘i in advance of APEC.  From now until the culminating APEC summit in November, UH Mānoa will host six large-scale international conferences on economic, political and cultural issues currently facing the Asia-Pacific region. These include the Northeast Asian Economic Forum and Young Leaders Program, APEC Climate Change Symposium, APEC Higher Education Conference, and the Asia-Pacific Art Forum SPAMMAPS.

The high profile of the APEC summit is clearly serving as a catalyst for other conferences on international cooperation and the Asia-Pacific region, making Hawai‘i a more attractive destination for serious international academic gatherings.

The conference is open to the public. For more information on APTS, please visit the conference website http://www.economics.hawaii.edu/apts/home.html or contact UH Mānoa Economics Professor Denise Eby Konan at konan@hawaii.edu.
