The Shidler College of Business at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa celebrated 50 years of mentorship and student awards at its premier event, “Business Night,” at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel on Thursday, May 5.  Title sponsor was First Insurance Co. of Hawai‘i Ltd.

“This is the one night that students can build on their career connections by meeting professionals across all business sectors,” said V. Vance Roley, Dean of the Shidler College of Business. “It also marks an important milestone in the College’s history of connecting with Hawai‘i’s business community.”

Business Night was created in 1961 to connect students with Hawai‘i’s business professionals. This year, over 220 students were matched one-to-one with professionals in their chosen field to learn about business careers and job opportunities. Approximately $40,000 in cash awards were presented to top students in various business majors. Cash awards are donated annually by companies in Hawai‘i. (See attached list for student awards and company sponsors.)

Keynote speaker was Shidler alumnus Eddie Lam, CEO of Onlen Fairyland (HK) Co. Ltd., Feng Tai Footwear Co. Ltd.  Lam’s company exports more than 80 million pairs of shoes worldwide, including such brands as Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, Tweety, Batman, Hello Kitty, Transformers, and Strawberry Shortcake.

Over the past 50 years, Business Night has impacted well over 15,000 students and presented more than $1 million in cash awards. It is the College’s premier student event attracting between 400-500 participants.
