HONOLULU – Thousands are anticipated to attend the Pearl Harbor Apprenticeship and Engineering Career Fair on Saturday, March 26. This annual recruitment event is coordinated in partnership with Honolulu Community College and the Pearl Harbor Apprenticeship and Engineering Program.

8 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Honolulu Community College

In the next five to ten years, Pearl Harbor is anticipating a large number of its current baby boomer population to retire. The job fair is designed to proactively employ and train individuals to avoid this massive shortfall.

Representatives from 18 trades and the engineering department along with representatives from Honolulu Community College will have displays at the career fair. Positions available are: apprentices, equipment specialists, engineering technicians, professional, analytical and administration positions. In addition, the federal police and fireman recruiters will be on site.

By the end of the year, the shipyard plans to add about 150 more employees to its nearly 5,000-member workforce. Men and women will have the unique opportunity to work alongside journeymen and women, receive trade theory training at approximately $19 per hour with full federal benefits while earning a government-sponsored associate degree in applied trades from Honolulu Community College. At the end of four years, apprentice program graduates will earn $28 or more an hour.

Eligible candidates must be a United States citizen, 18 years of age by January 2012 with a high school diploma or equivalent, and pass a physical exam, security clearance and ASSET Test in math and English.

Honolulu Community College will be administering the two hour timed ASSET Test between May 16 through May 27. The exam will test for English writing, reading comprehension and math skills. Test times will be scheduled by Pearl Harbor. The college is offering an eight hour ASSET preparation workshop for $100. Interested individuals can call (808) 845-9296 for more information.
