UH Mānoa’s Lyon Arboretum announces a selection of cooking, crafts and gardening classes for adults and a week of fall intersession classes for children. 
 
Fall 2010 classes include:
  • Basics of Good Gardening: Friday, September 24, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Bubba Walker, Jean Thomas and Sue Girton will teach the proper techniques of plant selection, soil preparation and fertilization. Cost is $15.
  • Chocolate, Chocolate: Saturday, October 2, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. In this hands-on chocolate history, chocolate tasting and chocolate making class, students will learn about the many varieties of cocoa beans and chocolate with some tastings, Aztec and Mayan uses of chocolate and how to make their own chocolate bars from scratch.  Class is taught by UH Mānoa ethnobotanist Nat Bletter. Cost is $25.
  • Silk Scarf Painting: Saturday, October 9, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Accomplished artist Wendy Kamai will share hints for creating your own colorful silk scarf with colorful fluid designs, using a wax resist process. Students will learn how to use salt as a drying agent to get impressive results with simple designs. Cost is $25.
  • Fast & Hot, Straight from the Wok!: Saturday, November 13,, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Ryan Murakami, owner of Conscious-nest Catering, is back for another ono and entertaining class, showcasing some of the many possibilities with a wok. Cost is $20.
  • Children’s Volcanic Art & Science: Monday, October 4-Wednesday, October 6 from 8:30-2:30 p.m. In this three day, hands-on class, children, grades 1-5, will build a mosaic volcano in the middle of the children’s garden and learn about volcanic activity in Hawai‘i.   Class is taught by Ambesa, freelance mosaic artist, and Richard Sears, Jill Laughlin and Jamie Krolikowski, education staff at the Arboretum.  Cost is $120.
  • Children’s Rainforest Explorations: Thursday, October 7 and Friday, October 8 from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Two full days of hands-on, minds-on activities at the Arboretum. Children, grades 1-5, can go hiking, explore rainforest ecosystems, learn about Hawaiian culture and do some garden science. A great opportunity for kids who love the outdoors and those who’d like to learn more about Hawai‘i’s natural history. Class is taught by Richard Sears, Jill Laughlin and Jamie Krolikowski, education staff at the Arboretum.   Cost is $80.

The Lyon Arboretum is open Mondays to Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Arboretum is closed on state and federal holidays. Admission to the gardens is free. Donations are gladly accepted.
