The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Shidler College of Business has been awarded a $387,551 renewal grant for its Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) program for the first year, with an anticipated combined total of $1.55 million through 2014. “UH CIBER is strategically positioned to capitalize on a wealth of Asia-Pacific resources and fulfill our goal of promoting U.S. competitiveness through enhanced collaboration, communication, and trade in the Asia Pacific Region,” says UH CIBER Director Shirley Daniel.

UH CIBER plans to leverage its resources as a Research Extensive University with partners in the business community, U.S. Pacific Command, East-West Center, and federally funded National Foreign Language Research Center and three National Resource Centers. The common goal is to make a significant contribution to ensuring America’s competitiveness and continued global economic, political, military, and social leadership.

During its past grant cycle, UH CIBER created new Asia-Pacific-related programs including Microfinance Field Study to South Asia, Faculty Development Field Study to Vietnam, Online Business Modules in Chinese, and Interdisciplinary International Research. In its upcoming grant cycle, UH CIBER plans to build upon foundational programs such as the Pacific Asian Management Institute Summer Program, Asian Field Study, and Pacific Asian Consortium for International Business Education and Research. These programs have over 20 years of past success reaching thousands of students, faculty, and community members, and developing new programs partnering with the UH Sustainability Action Alliance, UH Islamic Asia Initiative, and Hawai‘i Technology Entrepreneurship Network.

UH CIBER received its first grant in 1989 and was part of the original six CIBER centers to be awarded nationally. Since 1989, UH CIBER has received continuous funding from the U.S. Department of Education.
