The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo Lehua Writing Project presents a one-week intensive workshop for teachers at the Kaiao Community Garden at the Hilo Boys and Girls Club in Downtown Hilo June 28-July 2, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

“Place-Based Education: A Literature and Writing Odyssey for Changing Times” is a writing and literature workshop that focuses on curriculum practices and pedagogical coherence to deepen love and knowledge of Hawaiʻi. The workshop utilizes the Hinaikeahi and Hiʻiaka stories (Hawaiian) and the Odyssey (Greek) to creatively develop the participant’s own interests, teach stories of place and people, and support an awakening of the personal and collective odyssey of participants’ lives in these contemporary and changing times.

Each of the five days, guided by the themes of Darkness, Chaos, Self-Reflection, Understanding, and Returning to the Source, will serve as the basis for in-depth discussion, creative writing, and curriculum development. PDE3 credits are available.
