Dr. Luoluo Hong, vice chancellor for student affairs and acting athletic director at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, today announced that three finalists have been selected for the University‘s permanent athletic director position. The finalists will meet with the University community and public beginning Wednesday, December 10.

"Members of the search committee have been hard at work developing screening criteria and reviewing applications since early October, shortly after the closing date for application submissions," remarked Hong, who also serves as search committee chair. "We have a group of really committed individuals on the search committee. They have devoted many hours and careful thought into this process.

"Vulcan Athletics is at a crucial time in its forward momentum, and this search is probably one of the most important UH Hilo has conducted," she added.

The finalists and their interview dates are: Paul Batchelder, senior associate athletic director at the University of North Texas, December 10; Dr. R. Wayne Edwards, sports committee chair for the Camden Yards Sports & Entertainment Committee and former Towson University Athletic Director, December 17; and Bob Wagner, athletic director for Kamehameha Schools-Hawaiʻi Campus and former head football coach for UH Manoa, January 22.

A reception for the public to meet the finalists has been scheduled for 5:00 — 6:00 p.m. on each of the three interview dates. Interested members of the community should contact Audrey Hirayama, secretary for the Office of Intercollegiate Athletics, at 974-7520 to obtain location information and confirm attendance.

Over 80 applications were received for the position of athletic director. The anticipated start date for the new incumbent is March 1, 2009.
