The U.S. Department of Education has awarded a $683,808 grant to the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo. The grant, from the Native Hawaiian Education Act Program, continues the Pathways program conducted by Na Pua No'eau, Center for Gifted and Talented Native Hawaiian Children, from October 1, 2008 to September 30, 2009.

Since the Pathways Program's inception in 2003, over 229 participating students have gained valuable skills to ensure their success in pursuing educational and career goals in the natural and environmental sciences. Pathways participants have come to understand the importance of bridging science and culture in order to preserve Hawai'i's precious resources. More importantly, the students have been inspired to broaden their career and educational goals and seek higher educational and career goals.
