Sara Cook, a doctoral student in the College of Education‘s exceptionalities program at the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoā, was selected to participate in an inaugural cohort of doctoral student scholars in special education research by the Division for Research of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) this past October. A graduate of the college‘s special education masters program, Cook was one of only ten doctoral students selected nationally.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from leading researchers in the field of special education and am looking forward to meeting doctoral students across the country who share my interest in special education research," she said.

The scholars program is designed to enhance the research training of future leaders in special education. Through a series of online seminars, participants will connect across different universities to raise the standard of scholarship through sustained inquiry into the question, "What makes for excellence in special education research?" Noted scholars in the field of special education, such as Dr. Karen Harris of Vanderbilt University; Dr. Michael Coyne of the University of Connecticut; and the COE‘s own Dr. Bryan Cook, will lead the seminars.

Dr. Cook expressed, "We‘re very proud of Sara being one of the ten doctoral students selected for this prestigious, national-level program. Not only will her involvement enhance her research skills, but it reflects well on our Special Education Program and the University of Hawaiʻi as a whole."

The culminating seminar will be held at the CEC‘s 2009 Convention and Expo in Seattle on April 3, 2009. For more information, go to www.cecdr.org.
