The public is invited to "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" on the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo campus to protest rape, sexual assault and gender violence on Thursday, November 13, beginning at 11:30 a.m. on the Campus Center Plaza. Men, women and children are invited to participate, and men are encouraged, but not required to, walk in women‘s shoes. High heels in various sizes will be available on site, on a first-come, first-served basis.

"One in three women has experienced gender violence in her lifetime. A woman is raped every 90 seconds in America," said Frank Baird, founder of the march. "That means someone you know, someone you care about has been the victim of sexual violence."

"I think events like this are a great way for students to get involved with a major health issue which affects young adults on college campuses all over the country," said Dr. Luoluo Hong, vice chancellor for student affairs. "By involving men in these kinds of efforts, it shows that rape and domestic violence aren‘t just women‘s issues. They affect the entire community."

The march is sponsored by the UH Hilo Sexual Violence Prevention Program Planning Committee in collaboration with the Women‘s Center, Housing, and Intercollegiate Athletics. The history of the march is online at www.walkamileinhershoes.org.
