UH Manoa’s Lyon Arboretum offers Saturday classes on crafts and gardening

The Lyon Arboretum is offering two morning classes on Saturday, November 1 on native Hawaiian crafts and vegetable growing.

Niho Oki: Learn how to make a Niho Oki, a traditional Hawaiian utility knife, with inset shark teeth. Niho Oki are used to strip the outer bark from wauke for kapa, and to carve patterns on the iʻe kuku (kapa beater). Kahakauila Toledo will teach this special class and students will receive a kit with materials for making one Niho Oki. 9:30-11:30 Saturday November 1, 2008.
Cost for the class is $20 + $25 supply fee (includes one Niho Oki kit)
Additional kits may be purchased at the class. Class size is limited.

UH Pantry: Vegetable Seeds for Hawaii‘s Gardens
Are you ready to put in your own garden and grow your own fresh vegetables? Learn basic propagation techniques, about soil testing, plant disease diagnosis and the University of Hawaii‘s Seed program. Students will receive seeds developed especially for Hawaiʻi gardens and additional seeds will be available for sale.
Grace Asperin, Cate Overstreet, and Desmond Ogata will help get you ready to grow your own! 9:30 -11:30 Saturday, November 1, 2008.
Cost for the class is $15. Class size is limited. Call 988-0461 to register.


The Lyon Arboretum is open Monday — Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Arboretum is closed on state holidays. Admission to the gardens is free. Donations are gladly accepted.
