HONOLULU - At the midpoint in the six-day eWaste Disposal Days program, the University of Hawaiʻi (UH) has collected over 650,000 pounds of unwanted electronics for recycling at threeof seven collection sites. With this level of interest from Hawaiʻi residents, there is ample opportunity throughout the remainder of the drive to surpass the UH/DOE‘s 2006 recycling amount of 1.2 million pounds, which would establish this collection program as a State of Hawaiʻi eWaste collection record.

David Lassner, UH Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer, commented that "the University of Hawaiʻi is delighted to work with our partners on Hawaiʻi's largest eWaste recycling program ever in support of the sustainability of the communities we serve throughout the state."

Unwanted electronics are being collected on Friday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. from public and private schools and universities, all City, County, State or Federal/Military branches in Hawaiʻi, small to medium sized businesses with less than 100 employees and non-profits. Pre-registration is required.

Registration is not required for Hawaiʻi household residents who wish to recycle their personal eWaste free of charge on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at one of the seven drop off sites located at UH campuses on the islands of Oʻahu, Kauaʻi, Maui and Hawaiʻi, plus Kealakehe High School in Kailua-Kona.

Staff will be available at all sites to assist with unloading of equipment. Complete information needed for participation in the recycling effort, including a list of acceptable eWaste items, maps to the seven drop off sites, and a list of organizations that accept equipment donations for reuse, is available at the event webpage at www.hawaii.edu/ewaste.

All equipment collected during eWaste Disposal Days will be processed in North America in an environmentally responsible way and recycled into commodity grade materials. Recycling and disposal services are provided courtesy of Apple.
