A record-high 12 student films from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa‘s Academy for Creative Media will be featured at the 2008 Louis Vuitton Hawaiʻi International Film Festival.

The program will include the first U.S.-China student film co-productions, three films made by a collaboration of ACM students and students from Shanghai University‘s School of Film and Television Art & Technology. The films were written, produced and directed by the international student teams and shot on location in Shanghai in both Chinese and English.

The three short films follow the theme "Better City, Better Life," Shanghai‘s motto for its 2010 World Expo. Some of the Shanghai University filmmaking team will be present for the premier of the films.

A documentary on the unique international filmmaking effort, and a short feature shot in Hawaiʻi by an earlier ACM-Shanghai University crew are also part of the program.

The ACM films will be shown October 14 at 6 pm at the Regal Dole Cannery Theatres. They will be preceded at 4 pm by a free screening of student films from Shanghai University. ACM and Shanghai University participate in the SMART (Student Media Art) Exchange, co-sponsored by the Hawaiʻi and Shanghai International Film Festivals.

"We are proud of the diverse stories — and the diversity of our student story-tellers," said ACM Chair and Professor Tom Brislin. "We are especially proud that Hawaiʻi students are leading the groundbreaking initiative of international co-productions with China. The Hawaiʻi International Film Festival is the ideal place to give these films a world premier."

The ACM student films to be shown October 14 include:

  • Goendama (Five Yen Coin) by Yayoi Ikezaki
  • Rain by Thomas Takemoto-Chock
  • Red Dirt by Monet Sadural
  • Just Like That by Nasser Marghalani
  • The Hollow by Dana Ledoux Miller
  • Yamanote Line by Ark Fang Ran Mu
  • Blood Colony by Jacob Holcomb

The student films that are part of the Hawaiʻi-China Film Development Programs are:

  • Fresh Lenses by Crystal Chen
  • It Happened One Afternoon by Russell Blanchard
  • Bamboo Pole by Ark Fang Ran Mu
  • Birthday Gift by Zhou Wei
  • With Me by Robert Omura

The state Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism, Hawaiʻi Film Office and the Hawaiʻi State Legislature provided support for the Hawaiʻi-China Film Development Programs.
