UH Manoa Social Work professor selected for Fulbright Fellowship

Pam Arnsberger, professor and researcher at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa‘s School of Social Work, has been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship for Senior Researchers at Queens University in Northern Ireland to study and evaluate outcomes of consumer-based caregiver models of service delivery for the elderly.

Arnsberger graduated summa cum laude from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1973 and received her Master‘s Degree in Social Welfare from the University of California at Berkeley in 1975. After practicing as a social worker for 12 years, she received her Ph.D. from UC Berkeley, graduating with distinction in 1991.

Her area of research has been primarily in aging with an emphasis on the development of community-based long-term care service delivery. She has evaluated the effectiveness of a number of interventions designed to optimize autonomy and independence for elders.

She has also focused on case management for people with Alzheimer‘s disease and their caregivers.
Arnsberger‘s most recent work included surveys on eldercare for the legislature of the State of Hawaiʻi for which she was awarded a Na Lima Kokua award for research and service from the Hawaiʻi Pacific Gerontological Society.

Aside from her local and national work, she has done research in China, Japan, Korea, and soon, in Northern Ireland.
She has published extensively in such periodicals as The Journal of Health Services Research, The Gerontologist, Journal of Public Health Policy, Journal of Cross Cultural Gerontology, Journal of Women and Cancer and Alzheimer's Disease and Associated Disorders: An International Journal. She also and makes frequent presentations at national and international conferences.
