Public meeting to discuss naming of UH Manoa School of Social Work

There will be a public hearing later this month to discuss a proposal to name the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoaʻs School of Social Work in honor of alumnus and community leader Myron B. "Pinky" Thompson. Interested faculty, staff, students, community representatives and other individuals are invited to present oral or written testimony.

Mr. Myron B. "Pinky" Thompson was a distinguished alumnus of the School of Social Work. He received his Masters of Social Work degree from UH Mānoa in 1953 and began a career in the field of social work as the Director of Social Services for the Salvation Army‘s children residential home.

In 1962, he was appointed as the Executive Director of the Queen Liliʻuokalani Trust (current the Queen Liliʻuokalani Children‘s Center). In 1967, he became the State Administrator for Governor John Burns and co-founded Alu Like, a non profit social service agency dedicated to helping Native Hawaiians achieve social and economic self-sufficiency.

Mr. Thompson became the first chair of the State Land Use Commission and in 1971 he became the Director of the State Department of Social Services, where his responsibilities included managing statewide healthcare systems for Native Hawaiians. In 1974, Mr. Thompson became a trustee for Bishop Estate, from which he retired in 1994. Papa Ola Lokahi was also founded in 1988 by Mr. Thompson and he continued to serve the people of Hawaii. Mr. Thompson passed away in 2001.
