In the new position, Takayama will continue as spokesperson for UH Mānoa while managing the University Relations team and overseeing government relations. He has been serving as Director of Communications at UH Mānoa since April 2007.
Takayama had also served as Communications Director at the UH‘s John A. Burns School of Medicine from 2005-07, and before that he was a reporter for KHON2 News for eight years.
While attending UH Mānoa, Takayama was a reporter for the Honolulu Star Bulletin. Following graduation in 1978, he served for thirteen years as press secretary to U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye in Washington, D.C. From 1992-1997, he was spokesman for the State of Hawaiʻi Department of Public Safety and for Lt. Governor Ben Cayetano.
