Freshmen enrolled at UH West Oʻahu (UHWO) this fall will see an expanded variety of support services to enhance their learning experience. In addition to a newly staffed Kapolei office, equipped with computers, a student lounge and study areas, the university is launching its first-ever Learning Community program designed to provide new freshmen with the skills necessary to succeed in college.

The Learning Community is a first-semester support program whereby a small group of students take courses together. Freshmen who are accepted into the program will enroll in a cluster of the following content courses that meet general education and/or graduation requirements:

· MATH 103 College Algebra· ENG 100 Composition I· HPST 201 Intro to Hawaiian Studies· SD 100 The University Experience

The purpose of the University Experience course is to provide new students with the skills and knowledge essential for a successful college experience, offer information on university resources and provide a greater understanding of the learning process.

As reported by the Chronicle of Higher Education, Learning Community programs can help at-risk students to feel engaged in their studies. Students participating in Learning Community programs were also more likely than others to remain in college into their senior year.

Additional UH West Oʻahu support services include a full-time, designated academic advisor to assist and offer guidance to freshmen for their chosen field of study.

For more information about the UHWO Learning Community program, call Freshmen Academic Advisor Margy Ledward at 454-4700 or email mledward@hawaii.edu.
