Jane Kadohiro, assistant professor in the School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, has been named the recipient of the 2008 Robert W. Clopton Award for Outstanding Community Service. The Clopton award annually recognizes a Mānoa faculty member who has played a socially significant role by applying intellectual leadership and academic expertise to the improvement of the community.

Kadohiro has taken her role and skill as an educator, a nurse and a diabetes educator and utilized it for the benefit of the community and State. Her contributions have helped improve the health and well being of Hawaiʻi‘s people and the quality of health care delivered by her professional colleagues.

"She has dedicated her life both personally and professionally to bringing about a world without diabetes," notes Majken Mechling, Executive Director of the American Diabetes Association, Hawaii Market. "We salute her for her lifelong commitment to this cause. There is no one more deserving of this award."

Kadohiro credits her personal experience with type 1 diabetes with largely influencing her research and career field, which has spanned more than 40 years. She is an active community member and especially known for her work with youth in the community. Among her activities are the initiation of the Hawaiʻi Diabetes Youth Camp and the International Conference on Diabetes in Native Peoples, as well as chairing numerous local and national conferences and programs on diabetes.

Kadohiro will be recognized for her achievements along with other UH award recipients at the annual Convocation ceremony to be held September 9, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at Kennedy Theatre on the UH Mānoa campus. The ceremony is open to the public at no charge and no reservations are needed.
