HONOLULU — Mentoring and travel assistance grants are being offered by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for their joint high performance computing, networking, storage and analysis conference, Super Computing 2008 (SC08), which will take place November 15-21 in Austin, Texas.

The Broader Engagement grants are available to undergraduate and graduate students who are enrolled full time for at least one semester during the 2007-08 academic year, and are at least 18 years of age. Faculty and young professionals will also be considered.

SC08 is committed to broadening the engagement of individuals from groups that have traditionally been under-represented in high performance computing, and the SC08 Broader Engagement initiative will award participation grants to provide travel assistance to Native Hawaiians, Pacific islanders, Alaska Natives, Native Americans, African Americans, Hispanics, women and those with physical disabilities.

"Successful applicants for travel assistance grants will have access to unprecedented opportunities through the SC08 Broader Engagement initiative," said Tony Baylis of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, SC08‘s Broader Engagement Chair. "Our mentorship program plans to provide hands-on learning, while connecting students with leaders in high performance computing and related fields. For the right individuals, this can be a career changing experience."

Dr. Susan T. Brown, Director of High Performance Computing Outreach for Information Technology Services at the University of Hawaiʻi, is working with Baylis on the Broader Engagement Committee. She noted that, "In past years, grants from this program have enabled several University of Hawaiʻi faculty, staff, and students to attend an SC conference. It‘s an excellent opportunity for personal and professional growth in all areas of any super computing career."

SC08, sponsored by the ACM and IEEE Computer Society, will showcase how high performance computing, networking, storage and analysis lead to advances in research, education and commerce. This premiere international conference includes technical and education programs, workshops, tutorials, an exhibit area, demonstrations and hands-on learning.

Applications for SC08 Broader Engagement travel assistance grants are being accepted through August 15, 2008. In addition to complimentary conference registration, grant recipients will be reimbursed for expenses associated with SC08 lodging and transportation, up to a pre-determined amount.
