Dr. Richard Castillo, UH West Oʻahu social sciences division chair and psychology professor, will deliver the keynote presentation at the 2008 Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Canada (RPNC) World Congress for Psychiatric Nurses conference this month. In an address titled "Toward a New Paradigm for Mental Illness and Treatment: A View from Medical Anthropology," Castillo will discuss "client-centered psychiatry," a cross-cultural, client-centered approach to the assessment and diagnosis of mental illness.

An incorporated body, the RPNC provides a unified provincial, national and international voice for Canadian Registered Psychiatric Nurses with a vision to provide quality mental health services for all Canadians. The World Congress for Psychiatric Nurses is an international event attended by more than 400 professionals working in all areas of mental health including nurses, family physicians, educators, therapists, social workers and more.

Dr. Castillo is a medical anthropologist specializing in the cross-cultural study of mental illness and treatment, and a Fellow of the American Anthropological Association. He holds a PhD in Medical and Psychiatric Anthropology from Harvard University and is the author of the influential title, Cultural and Mental Illness: A Client-Centered Approach.
