HONOLULU — A new dual-enrollment, dual-admission program called Mānanawai will allow UH West Oʻahu and Kapiʻolani Community College students to complete their university degree more quickly and more affordably. The partnership between the two institutions allows students to enroll at both campuses and work toward the completion of a baccalaureate degree.

Students may enroll in the Mānanawai partnership in two ways:

  1. Students admitted to UH West Oʻahu may declare Kapiʻolani CC as their home campus and enroll in courses at Kapiʻolani CC paying the community college tuition rate; or
  2. After earning 24 credits and maintaining a 2.0 GPA at Kapiʻolani CC, students who are accepted as UH West Oʻahu transfers may continue to take applicable courses at Kapiʻolani CC, attending classes at the community college tuition rate.

Once admitted to this program, students may enroll in courses at either campus, paying the applicable tuition rate seamlessly.

"Mānanawai is a win-win situation for students and both campuses," said UH West Oʻahu Chancellor Gene Awakuni. "It‘s just the beginning for us as we look forward to establishing similar agreements with every community college, thereby helping more students attain university degrees."

Mānanawai is the second dual-enrollment and dual-admission agreement established by Kapiʻolani CC. A similar agreement, named Kaʻieʻie, was established with UH Mānoa last year.

"We‘re constantly looking for ways to better serve our students and expand their opportunities," said Kapiʻolani CC Chancellor Leon Richards. "Students who choose to enter Mānanawai or Kaʻieʻie will benefit from multiple resources at the community college and university level."

Respiratory Care and Accounting are the first programs to be offered under this umbrella agreement, allowing respiratory care students to obtain a Bachelor of Applied Science and accounting students to obtain a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting at UH West Oʻahu. The Respiratory Care program is accepting applications from students who are in good standing in the Associate of Science in Respiratory Care Program at Kapiʻolani CC or who are Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) and/or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RTT). More programs, such as Culinary Management, will be added to Mānanawai as pathways are formalized between the two campuses.

Students admitted under the Mānanawai program will receive advising at both campuses to help them graduate as efficiently as possible. They will also be eligible to apply for scholarships and grants offered to students upon transfer to UH West Oʻahu, and afforded the same privileges as all first-year transfer students.
