HONOLULU - The William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa announces that it will again honor the memory and many accomplishments of the late Congresswoman Patsy Takemoto Mink by awarding the 2008 Patsy Takemoto Mink Legislative Fellowship to a second year law student at a special "Patsy Mink Tribute" event and reception on Thursday, April 17, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. in Law School Classroom 2. The featured guest speaker will be Constance Lau, President & CEO, Hawaiian Electric Industries, Inc.

The Patsy Takemoto Mink Legislative Fellowship was created by law students from the William S. Richardson School of Law in 2003 to honor Congresswoman Mink‘s legacy. Each year, the Fellowship affords a law student interested in public policy and social justice the opportunity to intern in the House or Senate office of a member of the Hawai‘i congressional delegation in Washington D.C. Van Luong, the first Patsy Mink Fellow, is now a Legislative Assistant in Senator Daniel K. Inouye‘s Washington office.

Eligible applicants are William S. Richardson students in good academic standing with demonstrated leadership abilities and a commitment to public service. The Fellowship is funded by donors committed to continuing and building upon Congresswoman Mink's extraordinary achievements.

Dean Soifer stated, "It is fitting that Connie Lau will be our speaker as we celebrate Patsy Mink‘s leadership and honor one of our excellent students, a student who seems destined to carry on Congresswoman Mink‘s tradition of courageous contributions to Hawai‘i and the world far beyond our shores"

This event is open to the public. Please RSVP by Monday, April 14, 2008 to lawevent@hawaii.edu or call 808.956.8478.
