Three candidates for Leeward Community College chancellor invited to participate in interviews and open forums this week

PEARL CITY, Oʻahu - Three finalists have been identified for chancellor of Leeward Community College, and they have been invited to participate in second-round interviews, open forums and "Lunch with the Candidate" sessions on Wednesday, April 9, and Thursday, April 10.

The three candidates are:

  • Manuel Cabral, Interim Chancellor of Leeward Community College since March 2007. Cabral received his master‘s degree in Mathematics from Indiana University and his bachelor‘s degree in Mathematics and French from Lewis and Clark College. He has been in teaching and administrative positions at Leeward CC since 1980, including 19 years as Leeward CC‘s Division Chair of Mathematics and Sciences, Professor of Mathematics for 15 years, Chair of the Campus Council for five years, and Vice Chair of the Faculty Senate for two years. An open forum with Cabral is scheduled on Wednesday, April 9, 1 to 2 p.m. in the Leeward CC Student Lounge. Lunch with the Candidate is on Thursday, April 10, 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. in the cafeteria.


  • Helen Cox, Associate Vice President of Instruction at Salt Lake Community College since 2003. Cox received her doctoral degree in English-American Studies from the University of Utah, where she also did her master‘s degree work in English-American Literature. She obtained her bachelor‘s degree in English Literature at Harvard University. Cox has served in higher education for more than 25 years, primarily at Salt Lake Community College, starting as a faculty member then progressing on to Division Chair, Executive Assistant to the President, and her current position as Associate Vice President of Instruction. An open forum with Cox is scheduled for Wednesday, April 9, 11 a.m. to noon in the Leeward CC Student Lounge. Lunch with the Candidate is on Wednesday, April 9, 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. in the cafeteria.


  • Douglas Dykstra, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at Hawaiʻi Community College since October 2004. Dykstra obtained his master‘s degree in Secondary Education—Community College Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, and a master‘s degree in History—United States Diplomatic History from Kent State University. He received his bachelor‘s degree in History from Thiel College. His previous administrative experience includes service as Acting Dean of Instruction/Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at Leeward Community College for four years. An open forum with Dykstra is scheduled on Thursday, April 10, 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. in the Leeward CC Student Lounge. Lunch with the Candidate is on Thursday, April 10, 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the cafeteria.
