Renowned UH Mānoa Emeritus Professor of Theatre Terence Knapp to present Shakespeare’s Passion Play

HONOLULU — University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Emeritus Professor of Theatre, Terence Knapp, presents a lecture by Peter Milward, S.J., bringing into dazzling focus OTHELLO, MACBETH, KING LEAR and the PASSION OF JESUS CHRIST, on Saturday, April 12, at 7 p.m. at the University Catholic Center (Newman Center) on the Mānoa campus.

Father Milward is revered worldwide as the foremost Catholic Shakespearian scholar of the past half century. Now 83, he studied at Oxford before moving to Tokyo where he was ordained a Jesuit priest. Professor Emeritus at Sophia University, Tokyo and Director of the Renaissance Institute of Japan, he has published books on Hopkins, Eliot, Chesterton and Cardinal Newman plus over 300 collections of essays for Japanese students.

Terence Knapp is uniquely honored by the Hawaiʻi State House as Hawaii's adopted world class actor for his deeply moving performance as Father Damien on stage and screen. He received the UH Regents Medal of Excellence for Teaching and the Clopton Award for Outstanding Community Service. He is a Churchill Fellow and has directed almost all of Shakespeare's comedies, tragedies and romances at Kennedy Theatre since 1970.

Father Milward and Dr. Knapp have been friends for over 25 years in Tokyo where Knapp directed many Shakespeare plays in Japanese translation.
