HONOLULU — Alexander & Baldwin Foundation presented President David McClain, UH Mānoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw, and UH Foundation President and CEO Donna Vuchinich with their final check of $25,000 and fulfilled their $100,000 pledge to the Dan and Maggie Inouye Distinguished Chair in Democratic Ideals.

Established in 2005 to honor U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye and his late wife, Maggie, for a lifetime of public service, the Dan and Maggie Inouye Distinguished Chair in Democratic Ideals is jointly housed at the William S. Richardson School of Law and the Department of American Studies in the College of Arts and Humanities.

The chair emphasizes the democratic processes and the importance of public life, and will improve understanding of the unique context of Hawaiʻi, Asia, and the Pacific within the traditional positions of power and influence in the US.

"We are keenly aware—and appreciative of—the contributions Senator and Maggie Inouye have made to Hawaiʻi and its people since statehood to improve the quality of life for all," said A&B Foundation President Meredith Ching. "It is a pleasure to be among the committed supporters of this endowment that will provide opportunities for University of Hawaiʻi students and community members to hear speakers who embody the ideals of our inspirational senator."

The Alexander & Baldwin Foundation is funded by the business activities of Alexander & Baldwin, Inc., and its subsidiaries, which include A&B Properties, Inc., Matson Navigation Company, Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar (HC&S)/Maui Brand Sugar, and Kauaʻi Coffee Company.
