HONOLULU - Professors Curtis Ho and Catherine Fulford of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Educational Technology Department received a three-year, $3 million U.S. Department of Education Teacher Quality Enhancement Recruitment Grant as part of the technology department‘s Learning Enhancement through Innovation (LEI) Aloha‘s Connections to Teaching Careers.

The focus of the project is to produce more secondary teachers who are able to meet the challenges of Hawaiʻi‘s diverse, under-resourced classrooms by creating an educational continuum to recruit, prepare, and retain teachers in high-need subject areas and schools. "The priority is to get more teachers in math and science with emphasis on neighbor island and mainland recruits," Ho said.

Teacher recruitment activities will include: video commercials, scholarships, a new Prospective Teaching Academy for graduates of secondary school Teacher Cadet Programs and college majors in math and science, and remedial math support for educational assistants. Programming will be delivered online.

The College of Education is currently looking for a project manager who will help create a team for a distance education design center which will develop and produce quality online courses. The team will work closely with the College of Education‘s Technology and Distance Programs and Institute for Teacher Education.

The online courses will be fully online, rather than "hybrids" in which face-to-face interaction is still necessary. "This will be more economical in the long run and reach broader audiences," Ho added. "I am always interested in finding out how technology can be used as a tool to provide a mechanism for closing the divide between those who have access to education and those who do not."
