HONOLULU — Eleven instructors from the Hospitality and Tourism (HOST) Department at Kapiʻolani Community College, which represents 100 percent of the teaching faculty in the department, have achieved national recognition as Certified Hospitality Educators (CHE).

"This recognizes the department and college as one of three colleges in the nation to have 100 percent of their faculty achieve the CHE designation," said Ron Umehira, Chair of the HOST Department.

The other two colleges are the Conrad Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston and the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York.

Kapiʻolani CC instructors that received national certification are Laure Burke, Chelsea Chong, Doug Choy, Dave Evans, Rosalie Fernandez, Sheryl Fuchino-Nishida, Leilani Keolanui, Aloha Knaefler, Pat Kramm, Ron Umehira, and Palakiko Yagodich.

The instructors participated in an intensive workshop to learn new teaching methods, understand how adults learn, develop course objectives, create a positive classroom environment, and assess student‘s learning. Upon completion of the workshop, the instructors had to successfully pass a comprehensive exam and create a video of a live in-class session utilizing the principles learned from the workshop. The videos were then evaluated by the workshop facilitators.

CHE certification is granted by the Educational Institute of the American Hotel & Lodging Association. The Educational Institute is the premier source for delivering quality hospitality education, training and professional certification that serves the needs of hospitality schools and industries worldwide.
