The School Library Media Specialization, a component of the Library and Information Science (LIS) master‘s program at the UH Mānoa campus, is designated among the top ten in the nation by the U.S. News & World Report‘s 2008 "America‘s Best Graduate Schools."

The school library media specialization program — ranked 9th nationally - emphasizes curriculum design and assessment in teaching information literacy, technology applications in instruction and management, services and programs for children and youth, as well as foundational and current knowledge in library and information science.

"UH Mānoa clearly has a high quality program in school library media specialization and we are proud of that fact. While everyone enjoys moving upward in any poll and future students often take note of those rankings, it is important to recognize that such rankings should be just one of many factors that students consider when selecting the best university to meet their career goals," said Chancellor Virginia S. Hinshaw.

Andrew Wertheimer, chair of the LIS Program, said, "We‘re delighted to receive this peer recognition of our school library media specialization. We believe this distinction confirms the quality of our curriculum and the commitment of our faculty to produce a program of excellence. We especially recognize the contributions of Violet Harada, professor and associate chair of our program, for her vision and leadership in this specialty area."

Selections are based on the most nominations from survey respondents representing peer institutions. Respondents include deans, program directors, and senior faculty members at over fifty schools with accredited master‘s programs.

The LIS Program has been continually accredited by the American Library Association since 1965. More information on the LIS Program is available at http://www.hawaii.edu/lis/.
