HONOLULU- Students from the Honolulu Community College Sheet Metal and Plastics program and their professor, Danny Aiu, are planning to display two American flags they have fabricated in remembrance of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The flags will be on the campus mall by the end of the class session on Monday and will remain on display for the remainder of the week. This is the sixth year the flags have been displayed in honor of those who perished on 9/11.

In addition to constructing this year's flags, the sheet metal students plan to clean the existing permanent memorial and etch the names of the 3,000 victims of the attacks into the back of the plexiglass case of the memorial. Also for the 2007 commemoration, retired HCC staff member Katsumi Ige, has donated red ginger to grace each display.

Students in the sheet metal program constructed two flags in 2002: a drab one depicting 9/11 and another one brighter and more defined, representing a strong, proud nation one year later. The two original flags are on permanent display in the Sheet Metal shop and two new flags have been created each subsequent year.

As has become tradition, at the conclusion of Honolulu CC's 9/11 remembrance week, the students will donate the metal flags to a non-profit organization that would commit to displaying the flags year round.
