UH Manoa College of Education receives prestigious distance learning award

The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa‘s College of Education recently received the United States Distance Learning Association‘s (USDLA) 21st Century Award for Best Practices in Distance Learning at the 20th Anniversary National Conference in Kansas City, Missouri. The prestigious awards program honors outstanding individuals, organizations, and companies for excellence in the field distance learning. The College of Education will be amongst this year‘s awardees listed in the July 2007 edition of "Distance Learning Today," a quarterly supplement in USA TODAY.

"As we celebrate our 20th Anniversary as a premier organization for the entire distance learning profession, we are honoring the UH Mānoa College of Education as a leader in the industry," said Dr. John G. Flores, CEO of USDLA. The UHM College of Education has raised the bar of excellence and we are truly honored by its contributions to the distance learning industry."

The College of Education has offered many distance courses and programs to the neighbor islands since 1991. The Office of Technology and Distance Programs (OTDP) coordinates neighbor island program offerings and supports faculty in the effective use of technology to deliver courses statewide using interactive television, Internet, multimedia and hybrid delivery modes. Currently, the college offers a statewide teacher credentialing program with cohorts in secondary education, elementary education and special education. Its educational technology department offers a fully online MEd program in educational technology. Additionally, MEd programs in educational foundations, early childhood education, special education, curriculum studies, educational administration and rehabilitation counseling have been offered throughout the state via distance learning.According to the USDLA, the awards were created to acknowledge major accomplishments in distance learning and highlight those distance learning instructions, programs, and professionals who have achieved and demonstrated extraordinary results through the use of online, videoconferencing, satellite and blended learning delivery technologies.

The UH Mānoa College of Education was nominated for the award by the Pan Pacific Distance Learning Association.
