HONOLULU - Interim Manoa Chancellor Denise Eby Konan has announced the appointment of Christine K. Sorensen to be Dean of the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa College of Education.

Sorensen has been Dean of the College of Education at Northern Illinois University since 2001, overseeing six departments serving abut 5,000 students in undergraduate and graduate programs. Northern Illinois University is one of the 10 largest teacher preparation institutions in the country.

"Dr. Sorensen brings very special qualities that will take our university‘s College of Education to the next level in teacher education and pedagogical research," said search advisory committee chair Edward Shultz. "She brings rich mainland experiences coupled with empathy for non traditional approaches to education."

Sorensen‘s appointment is effective August 10, 2007.

Manoa Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Neal Smatresk, said, "Dr. Sorensen comes to us with a tremendous background in establishing community partnerships that have improved the success of students in her state. This, along with her strong record as a dean, and her excellent funding record, make us excited about bringing her to the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa."
