HONOLULU — The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa‘s Colleges of Arts & Sciences are pleased to present "One Ocean, One People," as part of its continuing forum series. Titled in conjunction with the Hōkūleʻa‘s historical 2007 voyage to Micronesia and Japan, the forum will feature:

  • Nainoa Thompson, a renowned navigator and sail master of the Polynesian Voyaging Society‘s double-hulled canoe, Hōkūleʻa. Thompson has inspired and led a revival of traditional arts associated with long-distance ocean voyaging in Hawaiʻi and throughout Polynesia. He returns to Hawaiʻi having just completed his most ambitious journey of nearly 7,000 miles. The voyage celebrated over 125 years of historical connections and intercultural exchanges between Hawaiʻi and Japan since King David Kalakaua‘s visit in 1881.

  • State winners of the 2007 VALUES FOR LIFE Essay Contest will be announced and students will read their prize-winning essays about values that are essential and common to living in a multi-cultural society, characterized by peace and social justice. Contest winners at the school level from public and private high schools will also be recognized.

Universal Values for a Democratic Society -- Nisei Veterans Endowed Forum Series was established by the Colleges of Arts and Sciences to foster thoughtful discussions on values and their role in enhancing a democratic society.
