HONOLULU — Governor Linda Lingle has released $3,448,000 in design funds for the development of a new science building at Maui Community College (MCC). The new facility will include classrooms, offices and laboratories for various science-related programs.

Biology, physics, chemistry, zoology, biochemistry and microbiology courses currently share space, which creates challenges with experiments and other laboratory configurations. The new facility will provide space where science students and faculty can interact, as well as provide space for laboratory storage.

"The state‘s investment in this new facility will further promote the development of our students‘ science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM skills," said Governor Lingle.

"MCC is very thankful for the release of funds to design the new science building," said MCC Chancellor Clyde Sakamoto. "This new facility for Maui Community College will certainly be a benefit to the students, faculty and community at large."

The total project cost is $40,889,000. In 2005, Governor Lingle released $300,000 for planning. The design consultant is expected to be selected within the next month and design for construction is expected to be completed by summer of 2008.
