HONOLULU — The University of Hawaiʻi‘s International Pacific Research Center (IPRC) and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Climate Center, located in Busan, Korea, recently signed an agreement to work together on the scientific and technical areas of climate prediction. The two climate centers will be partnering on research in the areas of climate predictability, climate prediction, and the socio-economic application of climate predictions. The research focus will be on the Asia-Pacific region.

The IPRC, a part of the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, conducts research to gain greater understanding of the climate system and the nature and causes of climate variations in the Asia-Pacific region. It also investigates how global climate changes may affect the region. Established under the "U.S.-Japan Common Agenda for Cooperation in Global Perspective" in October 1997, the IPRC is a collaborative effort between the University of Hawaiʻi and agencies in Japan and the United States.

The APEC Climate Center offers skillful real-time climate predictions for APEC member economies, shares costly climate data and information, and builds capacity in climate prediction and its application. The center aims to be a major catalyst towards social and economic prosperity among member economies by developing and applying innovative climate prediction techniques to mitigate climate-related damages and by developing methods to adapt to climate fluctuations and change.
