Comments from University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Interim Chancellor Denise Eby Konan on the State Auditor‘s Report on a Management Audit of Student Housing Services at the Mānoa campus:

"Since my appointment as UH Mānoa Chancellor in August of 2005, we have made it a top priority to improve our campus, including overcoming the past decade of neglect in addressing our student housing needs. In many cases, our work duplicates the recommendation of the Auditor‘s report; in a few instances we disagree.

"More student housing is needed. With the support of the State Legislature, the Mānoa campus has broken ground on a new residence hall to be completed in Fall of 2008. This new hall will provide excellent accommodations for 814 students. Students have told us they want more campus housing in order to be better engaged with campus life.

"We are improving dormitory conditions. By using revenue bonds allocated by the State Legislature, we have received funding for and have established an aggressive timeline for completing several major renovation projects beginning in Spring of this year. By the Fall of 2008 we will have invested more than $40 million to improve the physical conditions of our residence halls.

"Our Mānoa campus is safe, and we are implementing improvements to make it even safer. On a typical day, our campus is populated by more than 23,000 students and staff on about 300 acres — making this one of the most densely populated areas of Oʻahu. Yet our crime rates are no higher — and in many cases much lower — than the neighboring communities. The campus is a safe place to study, to live, and to attend events and classes."

The full response from the UH is included in the Auditor‘s Report.
