UH Manoa Distinguished Visiting Scholar Program features U-Mass communications professor and filmmaker

One of the world‘s leading scholars in a wide variety of media-related fields is scheduled for public appearances and a screening of films on the UH Manoa campus and at two UH community colleges as part of the Manoa Distinguished Visiting Scholar in the Liberal Arts program.

Sut Jhally is Professor of Communication at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Founder and Executive Director of the Media Education Foundation. Jhally has published and lectured extensively on the role that advertising and popular culture play in the process of social control and identity.

Jhally is the author of numerous books and articles on the media, an award-winning teacher, and the producer and director of films and videos dealing with issues ranging from gender, sexuality and race to commercialism, violence and ideology.

All programs — during the week of February 20 — are free and open to the public and will include question and answer sessions on the following schedule:

Monday, February 20 — 7:00 p.m. at Kapiʻolani CC ʻOhia 218Films: "Wrestling with Manhood," and "Class Dismissed"(90 minutes)

Tuesday, February 21 — 10:00-11:45 a.m. at Leeward CC GT 105Presentation on Media Literacy, sponsored by the UH Academy for Creative Media ("Tough Guise" and "Dreamworlds")

Thursday, February 23 — 7:00 p.m. at UH Manoa Architecture AuditoriumPublic lecture: "Tough Guise — The Crisis in Masculinity"

Friday, February 24 — 7:00 p.m. at UH Manoa Architecture AuditoriumFilm: "Hijacking Catastrophe" (90 minutes)

Jhally‘s appearances in Hawaiʻi are hosted by the International Cultural Studies Certificate Program that links studies in the Colleges of Languages, Linguistics and Literature, Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities and the School of Hawaiian, Asian and Pacific Studies and the East-West Center.
