LĪHUʻE, KAUAʻI — The University of Hawai‘i‘s Board of Regents (BOR) today approved the appointment of Howard S. Todo as Vice President for Budget and Finance and Chief Financial Officer for the University of Hawaiʻi at its monthly meeting held at Kauaʻi Community College.

"Howard Todo is a leader in his profession and a leader in our community. We are indeed fortunate that this UH alumnus has agreed to contribute his considerable talents to our university," said UH Interim President David McClain.

Todo most recently was Vice President — Finance and Chief Financial Officer of Island Air. He was a partner with the accounting firm of Ernst & Young LLP from 1988 to 2001, where his responsibilities included serving as partner-in-charge of the audit of the State of Hawaiʻi's Comprehensive Financial Report and overseeing a client list that included the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaiʻi, the East-West Center, the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation Highways Division, the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, the state Judiciary Branch, and the Hawaiʻi Department of Accounting and General Services. He joined Ernst & Young in 1973.

After leaving Ernst & Young, Todo had his own consulting firm and served as Acting Chief Financial Officer for the Board of Water Supply, where he oversaw the implementation of a computerized financial management system, and re-engineered and restructured the financial processes and organization of the Board.

"It's a great honor to be selected from all the highly qualified candidates the university had to choose from nationally. I would certainly not be in this position if I had not attended the University of Hawaiʻi, and it is gratifying to be able to be a part of the university's efforts to help offer similar opportunities to others," Todo said.

Todo is the Chair of the state of Hawaiʻi‘s nine-member Board of Public Accountancy. He also served as president of the Hawaiʻi Society of Certified Public Accountants and was formerly on the National Council of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Retail Merchants of Hawaiʻi, the University of Hawaiʻi Alumni Association, and the UH College of Business Alumni and Friends. He is a graduate of the University of Hawaiʻi College of Business Administration and was inducted into the CBA Alumni Hall of Honor in 1995. Todo has been a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in Hawaiʻi since 1974.
