UH Manoa Dietetics Program Earns National Accreditation From the American Dietetic Association

The University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa‘s Didactic Program in Dietetics has received national accreditation from the American Dietetics Association (ADA). The undergraduate program, which is part of the Food Science and Nutrition Program, successfully completed the ADA‘s extensive self-studies and site visit in Spring 2001.

The Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the ADA granted accreditation to the baccalaureate degree program in dietetics for a term of 10 years, extending to July 2010. Didactic Program in Dietetics is a term used by CADE to describe the program approved under the Standards of Education as meeting academic requirements leading to at least a bachelor‘s degree.

"The didactic dietetics program at UH Manoa is unique in that our location isolates us from the rest of the nation," explained Anne Shovic, Associate Professor of Human Nutrition, Food and Animal Science and Director of the Dietetics Program. "On the plus side, we serve a multi-culture/ethnic population, but on the downside, there is always the possibility that we are not living up to standards."

Site visitors commented that the UH Manoa dietetics program is one of the best programs in the nation, citing 11 strengths including "the faculty‘s standard of excellence, along with a sense of compassion; active, ongoing advising/mentoring/involvement by the faculty in placing students in practicums, internships and jobs; open and effective communication between/among faculty and students; and inclusion of a practicum (because most programs do not have such a valuable offering)."

The ADA bases their accreditation on the following standards:

—The mission statement or philosophy and measurable goals for the program shall provide guidance to the program.
—The program shall be accountable to its students.
—Resources available to the program shall be identified and their contribution to the program described.
—The curriculum shall provide for attainment of the expected competence of the program graduate.
—A systematic approach shall be used in managing and evaluating the program.

"To our delight, but not surprisingly, the site visit verified the excellent quality of our program. This is mainly due to the remarkable personnel involved — administrators, faculty, students and community professionals," said Shovic. "The net result from this positive accreditation outcome is an assurance to students who complete our program that they will be highly competitive with their peer students on the mainland for internships and jobs in the dietetics profession."

The dietetics option of the Food Science and Human Nutrition undergraduate program is a part of the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources at UH Manoa. The program is designed for students who want to prepare for a dietetic internship or for a career as a registered dietitian.
