Information for Visiting Researchers and Students

HIMB Housing

All visitors to HIMB must have an HIMB sponsor. Please obtain approval from a sponsor before proceeding with housing arrangements.

For dorm reservations and questions, fill out a housing application and contact housing managers at (primary form of communication) or (808) 236-7412, M-F 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For emergencies during your stay, call student residents at (808) 391-7158. A number of housing options are available on Coconut Island for long-term visitors.

Hale Hinalea

Hale Kaku

Single room with 3 bunk beds and kitchen. Screened-in porch. *

Lanai Suites

Eight suites with 4 single beds in each. Each room has its own bathroom and small sitting area. **

* Hale Kaku and Hale Ulua dorm facilities both have a bathroom but are not equipped with showers. Showers are in the adjacent building (NSF lab).

** Lanai suite guests must use the Beach House or Pauley Classroom Kitchen.

One-time linen fee: $5 per bed. Linen fee includes sheets, pillowcase, pillow, and a towel. A blanket will be provided if requested.

Reservation Policy

In order to confirm a reservation, a signed authorization (see housing application) and credit card information must be submitted.

Cancellation/Change Policy

Cancellations made one week or more prior to the reservation date will be assessed a flat rate fee of $20.00 to your credit card. Cancellations made less than 24 hours of the reservation date will be assessed a fee for the cost of 1 night stay.
If you are paying with a purchase order and need to make changes to your reservations, additional fees will be the responsibility of the visitor.


After your verification of your travel plans with the Director's office, a confirmation email and invoice will be presented to you.

To settle this invoice you must provide a form of payment (check, credit card, or US currency) to the Director's office prior to your departure. The Director's Office is open to receive payments Monday thru Friday from 08:30 to 16:30. Please note that graduate residents are not authorized to accept payments.

We require a credit card to make a reservation. If you do not make alternate payment arrangements with the Director's office prior to your departure, we will charge your credit card.
If you are staying for an extended period of time, you will be charged at the beginning of the month for each month of your stay.

Dorm housing comes with pots and pans, dishes, utensils, and toilet tissue. Lanai suites have communal access to a kitchen.
