Honoring the Life and Work of Dr. Sohn
An International Conference on Korean Language and Linguistics was held in honor of Dr. Ho-min Sohn for his lifelong contribution to the field and to celebrate his 80th birthday. It was held at Korea University in Seoul, November 2, sponsored jointly by the UHM Center for Korean Studies and the Research Institute of Language and Information at Korea University. Scholars and graduate students from the U.S., Korea, Japan, Australia, Taiwan, and Philippines presented a total of 43 papers at the conference. A banquet was held in conjunction, with some 150 attendees, and Dr. Sohn was presented with a 616-page festschrift , titled Studies in Korean Linguistics and Language Pedagogy: Festschrift for Ho-min Sohn (Korea University Press, 2013), along with four other books authored or co-edited by Dr. Sohn and published by Korea University in 2013.
Dr.Sohn has published a total of 22 books and 111 scholarly articles. He has been acknowledged as an eminent scholar in his filed with several distinguished awards: appointment as a UH President Fujio Matsuda scholar, 1985-86; a Presidential Award (medal) from South Korean President Young Sam Kim, 1997; a Tongsung Academic Prize from the Tonsung Academic Foundation in Korea, 2001; a UH Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Research, 2005; a 2011 Korean Government’s Culture Merit Medal from Korean President Myungbak Lee; and the Third Korea Foundation Prize, 2011.
