East Asian Languages and Literatures is pleased to sponsor a talk by Dr. Momoko Nakamura, a professor from Kanto Gakuin University.

Date: Friday, January 24, 2014
Time: 3:00 – 4:00pm
Location: Moore Hall 258

In this talk Dr. Nakamura will discuss the differences in translation of the speech of fictional non-Japanese male and female characters into the Japanese language. While the speech of western women in fiction is typically translated into stereotypical Japanese women’s speech, that of many western male characters is constructed using unique styles to represent non-Japanese men. This talk will discuss the impact of these differences in translation on Japanese language today.

Light refreshments will be served.
