Academics
UHM offers about 140 graduate or undergraduate courses wholly or partially related to Southeast Asia. Over 70 lecturers, visiting professors and resident faculty teach and research in the areas of Southeast Asia and Southeast Asian Languages. UHM regularly offers the languages most widely spoken in the region. Indeed, language courses comprise 40% of total courses offerings.

The Center for Southeast Asian Studies offers a Graduate Certificate in Southeast Asian Studies. The certificate requires 18 credit hours, at least a second-year proficiency in a Southeast Asian language and passing a final examination. Specific requirements are listed here.
Students seeking undergraduate or graduate degrees should apply to the School of Pacific and Asian Studies for admission to either the programs for a B.A. or M.A. in Asian Studies, and focus on Southeast Asia. Please see the SPAS website for specific application procedures and deadlines.
The only source financial aid offered by the Center is Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships in Southeast Asian Language and Area Studies. The School of Pacific and Asian Studies Studies administers FLAS fellowships for the Center. The SPAS website offers general information and a detailed FAQ on the fellowships.
Outside of the Center, the School of Pacific and Asian Studies offers a thorough list of funding information for both graduate and undergraduate students, including financial aid, graduate assistant positions and scholarships. The East-West Center located on the campus of the University of Hawaii at Manoa also offers student funding.
Southeast Asia Collection
The university's Southeast Asia Collection, located in the Hamilton Library, houses over 135,000 volumes, 900 videos and CD-ROMs, 108,000 microfiche, 3,000 reels of microfilm, 4,000 serial titles and 50 newspapers and periodicals.
Language Study
Now in its ninth year, the University of Hawaii runs an Advanced Filipino Abroad Program, a unique short-term summer immersion program which teaches the Filipino language, Tagalog, in the Philippines. The University also administers the Advanced Study of Khmer Language Program in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Under the aegis of the Southeast Asia Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI), the University of Wisconsin offers offers eight-week intensive language training in Burmese, Filipino, Hmong, Indonesian, Javanese, Khmer, Lao, Thai and Vietnamese.
